Choosing Care for Your Family Member

Written by Ella Stephen

If you have a family member who is in need of more care than you are able to provide, then it’s time to consider placing them in a nursing home. This is generally a very difficult decision for people to make, especially when they are not sure what will allow the family member to be happiest and best taken care of. By carefully choosing a nursing home for your loved one, you can rest assured that you have made the right decision for their future.

Make Sure You Visit

The most important thing to do when choosing a nursing home in Bristol is to set aside time to go and actually visit the location. Unfortunately, some people try to choose a nursing home based on information found online and in pamphlets, but going in person will allow you to pay special attention to:

  • How staff speaks to the residents
  • What it smells like
  • If the staff appears overworked
  • If the residents have plenty of opportunities for interaction
  • If staff meets the personal needs of the residents

Talk to Other Families

During your visit to a nursing home you are likely to run into family members of other residents. This is a great opportunity to talk to them about their experience at that particular nursing home and whether or not they would choose it again for their family member.

While choosing a nursing home is daunting, by spending a little extra time visiting locations and talking to residents, staff, and family members, you can make sure that you choose the right location for your loved one.
