Five Common Causes of Dry Skin

Written by Ella Stephen

Dry skin can be irritating because it can be itchy and flaky, and it can make fine lines and wrinkles easier to see. Fortunately, most dry skin problems can be easily treated by using the right lotions or skin care creams to add moisture to your skin. In addition, knowing the causes of dry skin can also help you treat it.

Low Humidity

A common cause of dry skin is a lack of moisture in the air. If you live in an arid climate, then your skin will be prone to drying out if you don’t take care of it. Making sure to hydrate your body will help relieve dry skin, so you will want to drink plenty of water during the day.

If the air is extra dry where you are, you may need a humidifier to add moisture to the air in your home. In addition, you should prep your skin by washing your face and body with moisturising soap or body wash and applying a moisturising lotion as soon as you’re done bathing. The lotion should be applied while your skin is still a bit damp to help seal in moisture.

Sun Exposure

If you love being outside on warm sunny days, your skin will feel the effects. However, if you apply a moisturising lotion with sun protection, you can prevent your skin from drying out and protect it from the sun’s UV rays. By protecting your skin against the sun with lotions, you not only help moisturise it but you are also reducing the chance of getting skin cancer.

Getting Older

A factor that you cannot control in having dry skin is getting older. As people age, their bodies change and there are less natural oils in their skin, which makes it drier. Although you cannot stop aging, you can treat your skin by applying treatment lotions made specifically for dry skin due to aging. Along with adding moisture, some of them brighten the skin so you get youthful skin with treatment lotion.

Using Fragrances

Although you want to smell nice, using products containing fragrances can dry out your skin. Instead of using products containing fragrances or perfumes, look for shampoos, body washes, and skin care products with natural ingredients such as Vitamin E, aloe vera, cocoa and shea butter, or honey. Along with softening your skin, you will smell good as well.

Medical Conditions

Your health can affect your skin and some conditions will cause it to become dry. Eczema and psoriasis will cause areas of red, dry, itchy skin that will usually require a doctor’s help to reduce itching and dryness. If you’re a diabetic, you may have problems with dry skin as well, so it is important to control your blood sugar levels and use moisturising lotions to rehydrate your skin.

If you have a problem with dry skin and it’s not related to a medical condition, making sure to stay hydrated and applying moisturising lotions, especially those with a SPF factor, can soften and smooth your skin.
