Summer Health Hazards in Florida

Written by Ella Stephen

If you have recently moved to Florida and are planning to be a part of the summer spirit of the Sunshine State, then you need to brace yourself for some impending challenges. Definitely, there will be a big crowd coming from all over the US to soak themselves under the sun and have fun on the beach, but the temperature will be extremely high. Every year a large number of people are admitted in hospitals of Florida wellness medical group experiencing the ill effects of summer. So, even if this is vacation time, ignoring the health risks of the season will be a big mistake. Here are some of the common summer dangers in Florida that can ruin your happy mood.

Sun Damage

If you are heading towards Miami, it is important for you to know that high temperature and humidity can have a direct impact on your health. There are high risks of dehydration, heat exhaustion and illness resulting from rising mercury.

Any outdoor plans will be torture to your skin. The sunrays are so high between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. that you can experience sunburns and sun damages. So, it is better to plan any physical outdoor activities either in the early morning or after 4 p.m. If you still need to go out apply sunscreen or protect yourself with an umbrella or by wearing a hat and sunglasses.

Dehydration is one of the most common challenges that people experience while enjoying a vacation in Florida during the summer time. The heat waves draw all the water from your body and leave you without any energy. Digestion becomes a problem and organs fail to perform properly.

The only way to combat dehydration is drinking plenty of fluids – water as well as juices. You need to take more fluids than you are losing. Eat fruits like watermelon, strawberries, cucumbers and all those that are water-rich. The idea is to stay hydrated all the time. This will retain your energy, even if the sunrays are strong.

Food Poisoning

Rising temperature and outdoor food during the summer are often followed by food poisoning cases. As per the report of Food and Drug Administration, almost 48 million cases of food poisoning are found throughout the United States.

To avoid this, avoid eating too much of fast food, raw meat or anything that is excessively oily. Also, don’t forget to wash your hand before eating anything.

Mosquitoes invade South Florida in summer and the residents find it almost difficult to control. This is one of the most legitimate public health concerns because of the many life-threatening diseases that mosquitoes bring along. West Nile virus, dengue fever and chikungunya are some of the common South Florida diseases that spread rapidly across the Caribbean.

Hence, try to stay indoors at dusk and dawn. Close the windows or put an insect net to stop the mosquitoes from entering your homes. Wear longer pants and socks to cover your skin. If you have to join any outdoor event, carry an insect repellent.

Bad Weather

If you think high temperature is the only thing you need to worry about, then you are wrong. Florida is the lightening capital of the United States because the number of strikes it experiences is higher than other parts of the country. Apart from that, heavy downpours and hurricanes are part of summer hazards. So, if you are planning to visit the beach and the weather is bad, check the forecast before leaving the house.

Although the many centers of Florida Wellness medical group and other hospitals are always there to help, but prevention is always better than cure. Enjoy the summer the way you like and take care of your health.
